STEM Outreach Hawaii

The Institute for Human Services focuses on preventing and ending homelessness in Hawaii. IHS runs Kahauiki Village, a plantation-style permanent supportive housing community. This particular village is fascinating: fully off-grid, sustainable, and filled with families of collectively over 260 children. That's where we come in! In Summer 2024, we will offer our first Outreach STEM program to the children of Kahauiki Village. Curriculum and activities from the "Math and Science of Amusement Parks" will use fun topics such as roller coasters and Gravitrons to teach universal physics concepts. Our days will be filled with hands-on building, creativity, and mini-lessons involving inertia, momentum, Newton's laws, gravitation, and acceleration.Â
